Node Operator Handbook

In the table of contents below you will find a list of resources that will assist you through the process of becoming a Lido Node Operator. Please look through the included information and feel free to ask any questions in the Lido Validators Telegram group or protocol-specific Discord Channel.

Node Operator Duties & Responsibilities

General (chain-agnostic)

Communications

The following contact details of relevant team members should be provided: - Email - Discord - Telegram - Phone (for selection of members, in case of emergency)

Expectations

Be present, active, and responsive. NOs are expected to monitor and engage promptly in the Discord and Telegram channels as part of the “normal course of operations” of running Lido validators.

Lido Node Operator Sub-governance Group (LNOSG)

The LNOSG is tasked with representing node operators in the DAO structure and helping to evaluate and advise on the onboarding of new operators, and provide input on governance discussions related to node operators. The LNOSG is working towards building a balanced node operator registry that is as decentralized, permissionless, and trustless as possible. This sub-governance group consists of representative members from onboarded node operator organizations and the Lido DAO. The LNOSG infrequently gathers to evaluate applications for new onboarding waves to recommend to the Lido DAO.

Simple DVT Module Portal

The Simple DVT Module portal contains information related to the deployment of the Simple DVT Module on Mainnet, upcoming testnet trials with Obol & SSV Network, DVT resources, and in the future will also contain performance metrics related to the testnets. Another testnet is tentatively planned for early Q1 2024 with both Obol & SSV Network, with additional information forthcoming.

Opt-In Validator Alerting

Discord-based monitoring and alerting are available to Node Operators in the curated set as an additional redundancy. Currently validator alerting is available for Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon. Once your team is configured to receive alerts, you’ll be tagged in the Lido Discord alerts channel.

A couple tips to minimize noise:

  1. Right click the channel and set your notifications to
  2. If you are continuing to receive pings/notifications for an issue that you are aware of, you have the option to Mute the channel for various time frames.

To receive alerts for a network in which you're engaged, complete the linked form and inform the relevant DAO contributors. If you would like to update the alerts you receive, please resubmit the form and again notify the team.

Ethereum Alerting Form (Curated Set only) Alerting Options: * Slashed validators * Validators with negative balance * Missed block proposal * Missed attestations * Poor sync committee participation
icon
Solana Alerting Form Alerting Options: * Validator offline for 5+ minutes * Vote distance greater than cluster average * Skip rate higher than cluster average * Validator “out of epoch”
icon
Polygon Alerting Form Alerting Options: * Validator missing checkpoints

General Expectations and Communication Requirements

Discord is the main communication hub, and most communication should happen in the appropriate channel under the “Validators” channel group. Telegram groups are for team-to-team discussions, private/confidential conversations, or for getting a hold of someone if Discord pings don’t work.

Be sure to keep track of whose contact information you submitted during the onboarding process. Any changes to points of contact or specific contact information (email, Discord, Telegram, etc.) should be communicated by sending an email to: nom@lido.fi

During the onboarding process your team will be added to a number of Telegram and Discord channels which we will use to communicate information regarding onboarding and in order to have a method of communication between your team(s) and Lido contributors. It is expected that you check these groups regularly in order to stay on top of any potential issues, urgent votes, etc.

icon
DAO Participation Additionally, NOs are expected to engage in pertinent DAO discussions via official forums, Discord, and Telegram groups. The Lido forums (https://research.lido.fi/) are where updates related to DAO governance and operations will be shared. We ask that your team remains abreast of updates and monitors the forum at least once a week, and familiarize yourselves with the Lido Governance process (linked below).

Governance

Node Operators are encouraged to participate in Lido Governance; refer to the Lido Governance Guide for process details.

Lido governance process

This post explores how the decisions in Lido governance process are made. Absolute most of the decisions made by the DAO have on-chain results: either immediate transactions or the transactions to be made in the future. To make sure that those decisions are well-informed, as well as properly communicated with the wider community, the governance process in Lido consists of multiple steps.

LEGO

LEGO is the grants organization within Lido. LEGO collaborates with Node Operators and third parties to provide valuable ecosystem grants within the Lido network. If you have a proposal for an initiative worthy of a grant, please get in touch with a LEGO nominee or council member!

LEGO | Lido Ecosystem Grants Organisation

The mission of the Lido Ecosystem Grants Organization (LEGO) is to provide valuable resources to contributors who help to improve Lido and the surrounding staking ecosystem, whether through development efforts, content, events, ideas or anything else.
